CARLTON.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

The word “Shakahari” is a Sanskrit and Hindi name. It references vegetarian diets found in the Indian subcontinent over more than 2,500 years. Here Shakahari Restaurant is a mere fifty years of age, but it continues a service which began with Melbourne’s first purely vegetarian restaurant in 1886.

Exclusively vegetarian, Shakahari has pioneered a radical cuisine. It recognises its Indian, Chinese Japanese and Malaysian roots. Yet it draws on Carlton’s cosmopolitan, especially Italian, culinary environment. The result has been a continuing freshness of ideas and an enthusiasm for an ever-widening range of herbs, spices, colourful and fresh fruit and vegetables.

With Shakahari’s longevity has come its deep appreciation for food that is nutritionally sustaining, balanced, and health promoting. Attention to each dish and the excitement of its vivid presentation is a signal of a restaurant and staff fully committed to your enjoyment and wellness.

Enjoy, too, both the indoor and courtyard venues of Shakahari’s heritage building. See how many features of its garden, furnishings and art reflect a love and respect for a restaurant that is rightly regarded as an icon, an institution, a dining destination.
